Knuckle Roll Chip Trick

The knuckle roll chip trick is similar to shuffling poker chips, everyone wants to learn how to do it.  Celebrities can be seen doing the knuckle roll in several movies.  When you first think about poker chip tricks, the knuckle roll is often the first chip trick that comes to mind.

Learning the basics of the chip trick takes minutes, but your movements will be extremely choppy and slow at first.  Unfortunately, to really master the knuckle roll where the chip appears to levitate across the top of your hand takes hours of practice.

I suggest using a thinner ceramic chip when first learning how to do the knuckle roll chip trick.  At least for me, it was easier to learn how to roll a thinner chip across my hand.  I believe this to be especially true for people with small hands.  If you have really small hands you might want to start out with quarters.

Start by placing a poker chip between your thumb and index fingers.  Line the front edge of the chip up with the second knuckle on your index finger.  Depending on how large or small your hands are, you may have to adjust the starting position of the chip slightly.

Using your thumb, push the chip up while at the same time lowering your index finger, letting the chip flop over the top of your index finger as pictured above.  When the chip begins to flop over, allow it to slide down while bringing up your middle finger so that it is caught near the base of your middle finger.

Now move your fingers together making them even again.  This will force the chip to snap upright as pictured above.  Now it is simply a process of repeating the above movements.

Now let the chip flop over your middle finger by lowering it.  Allow it to slide down towards your finger finger, catching it near the base as displayed above.

Snap the chip upright once again by bringing your fingers together.

Lower your ring finger so the chip again flops to the right, catching it with your pinky finger.  Catching the chip near the base of your pinky finger will feel awkward at first.  This part of the trick takes quite awhile to master.  I always dropped the chip at this point when I was first learning the knuckle roll.

Snap the chip upright by bringing your fingers together.  Now you have two options.  You can lower the chip to your thumb, or you can reverse the process, bringint the chip back in the other direction across your hand.  I'll show you have to lower the chip to your thumb as displayed below.

Allow the chip to sink down between your ring and pinky fingers while at the same time bringing your thumb over to catch it.

With the now resting on your thumb, bring it back underneath your fingers and return it to its original starting position so that you can repeat the process.

With a lot of effort, eventually you'll be able to float the chip across the top of your hand with one fluid movement.  Proper momentum while not letting chip pause is the key to mastering the knuckle roll chip trick.  Keep practicing and you'll eventually get past the initial slow choppy phase most beginner's get stuck at.  I think the effort is worth it as the knuckle roll really looks great once you're able to build up speed.
